Okay, I'm braving it and commenting. There are things I like and things I don't so I can't pick a side, lol. I love it on the hanger. Beautiful colors/fabric combo. Love the pattern. I think it needs tweaked for you though. But I am far, far from qualified to do that. Something about the gathers looks not quite right when it's on, and I agree, the neckline needs brought in. Other than that, I love it! I don't think it looks like a sack at all!

Very cute Jenny!

Just saw this on Flickr and you asked for comments so I'll try. I think I have this pattern and it was also too wide in the shoulders (hence the bra strap peaking out), but I'm not sure how to take it in there without taking off the yoke and cutting a smaller size.

For the other part that isn't quite right, I'd say the area under your arms is too full. It might help to take in the underarm seem a touch and see if that helps it lay a bit flatter in that area.

Other than that I love it.

There is so much beautiful about this it is definitely worth working on to make it something you like- I made a shirt that looks much the same so I want to try and fix it too! I wonder if it is just too big- I know that it will be an annoying and frustrating thing to fix but what about taking off the collar- taking the seams in a bit on that-then taking the seams where the sleeves hit the shirt a bit and gathering it so that the majority of the gathers fall in the front? I don't know- that could be all wrong. I do think the length is right though so I wouldn't shorten it. In any case your fabrics are really pretty and so is the top- what about wearing it with a jean skirt or casual black skirt?

Jerred

Hey Jenny,

I think you should just take it off and show us what your momma gave you!

Lovin' you (more than you'll ever know).

I love the fabrics! Which pattern did you use? I've made something similar and have to agree with the bra strap thing and gathers. When I made it again- it turned out better. But who wants to make it over and over, not always liking the end results.

That's the thing about sewing for yourself...it can be incredibly fun and totally annoying!

Carol,
Hi! I used Simplicity 3887. I may try to redo the gathers and see what happens. I think I made it a bit too big. Sizing on patterns is so screwy. I was afraid of making it too small (which has happened a few times also).
By the way Jerred, my momma would be a quite freaked out if she knew my brother-in-law was speaking to me in such a manner:)

well can't make up my mind. i think you needed to use a softer fabric so the grey part of the blouse could flow.gathers are sometimes a little tricky so you must be very careful. neck line a little to big but what the heck. i think it's great. I'm very proud of you to see how well you are doing with your sewing.
as far as measuring the correct size for you check your bust measurement and the pattern measurement.
hope to see you soon so i can show u
great work

this is a cute shirt, I know how hard it is to do the gathers because I made one too! I found this tutorial and I plan on using it the next time I make this pattern, looks way easier than the way I did it: http://indietutes.blogspot.com/2007/07/gathering-with-clear-elastic.html

Jennifer

OK! Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOO much for the tutorial. This is really ganna help. I will definately try this one again (I don't know if I should make it a size smaller or not). This weill really help me. The gathers are very tricky.

Jerred

Hey Babe,

Your momma would be proud of what she gave ya! ;0)

I just purchased a *very similar pattern to make a spring tunic. Mine is Simplicity 3751. I think your's turned out very nice. I've been practicing a lot of gathering on all the ruffles I've been sewing onto my baby's dresses so, I hope the gathering is easy for me on this project.

I don't sew, let's just put that out there. But I do wear clothes. So I think that qualifies me to have an opinion. I think there's too much material in the body. Taking it in on the sides might do the trick. Otherwise, it's totally cute.
